Prisoner Express has just published two volumes of poetry submitted by incarcerated authors across the US. A team of PE volunteers read through thousands of poems to find the poems for each anthology. Each volume had over 500 writers submit poems for consideration. Every prisoner who sends a poem gets a copy of the anthology mailed to them, whether their poem is chosen or not.
Reading each other’s writing helps prisoners see that they are not alone. Hearing the words of others helps normalize their prison experience and goes a long way to keeping each reader balanced and sane. Prisoners write about issues other than confinement and often express all the same thoughts and emotions of those of us in the free world.
