We have had an ongoing chess club for more than 8 years. As volunteers leave the area we have always managed to find someone new to lead this effort.
Currently the lessons are being created by a prisoner in Washington State. This is the first time we have had a program created by someone currently incarcerated. He sends his writings to his wife who then types it and mails it to us.
Playing chess embodies what is best about many of our PE programs. It causes one to focus intently. While in the focused state the prison mindset can disappear for awhile and creativity can flow. It is not an escape, but rather a concentration of energies to produce something greater.
