Chess Program ’16

We have had an ongoing chess club for more than 8 years and as volunteers leave the area we have always managed to find someone new to lead this effort.

Currently the lessons are being created by a prisoner in Washington State. This is the first time we have had a program created by someone currently incarcerated. He sends his writings to his wife who then types it and mails it to us.

Playing chess embodies what makes many of our PE programs so effective: it makes one focus intently. While in this focused state, the prison mindset may disappear and creativity can flow. It is not an escape, but rather a concentration of energies to produce something greater.
